Temperatures continue to reach record highs in the United States . This week, temperatures above 100 degrees were recorded in several parts of the country. However, in offices, these high temperatures are not reflected and even workers must bundle up.

Even though it’s record-breakingly hot outside, getting cold in offices is common. That’s because when air conditioning became standard in buildings in the 1950s, offices started to get “too cold ,” explains Salvatore Basile, author of “Cool: How Air Conditioning Changed Everything” (via CNN ).

Back then, building owners wanted to prove that they offered the comfort of air conditioning, but sometimes they offered too much. The use of air conditioning continues to this day when offices are still cold, but what are the reasons?
