Three tips to make air conditioning cooler amid extreme heat in the U.S.

In the United States there is an alert for extreme temperatures; from the Weather Service recommend maintaining hydration and proper cooling environments.

The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an alert for extreme heat and excessively high temperatures in different regions of the United States, especially in southern Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, as well as in some parts of California and Nevada. As a result, many people are beginning to plan how to cool their homes and offices to be able to get through these days without complications.

During extreme heat, air conditioners do not feel the same as when the temperature is lower, and it even seems that they do not cool the rooms as they really should. However, there are tips that can be applied.

1) Close blinds and curtains

A very important tip to make cooling work much better and to make the environment feel cooler is to prevent sunlight from entering the home during the hottest hours of the day.

In the rooms where it is possible, close blinds and curtains between 12:00 and 16:00 for a cooler sensation.

2) Keep them at a constant temperature

For these appliances to radiate more cold during extreme temperatures, it is advisable to let them work constantly during the day. In other words, keep them at the same temperature and do not change them from time to time. It is also not advisable to turn air conditioners off and on again continuously, as this impairs their operation.

Jennifer Amann, a senior fellow in the buildings program at the nonprofit American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, noted that turning the temperature down too low doesn’t work either. “It’s not really going to cool your house any faster,” she said in remarks picked up by Family Handyman.

Likewise, Shichao Liu, a professor of architectural engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, stressed, “People think, ‘If I make the thermostat set point at 15°C, I’ll get more cooling than a set point at 21°C,’ but that’s not correct. It gives you the same amount of cooling,” he emphasized.

3) The key: maintenance

Finally, it is essential to consider that there is no way for air conditioners to cool if they are not properly maintained. Consequently, it is vital to clean the filters periodically so that the ventilation operates correctly.

At the same time, a specialist can be contacted to make sure that the appliances have enough gas to operate. In general, it is recommended to do this during the winter, in order to be better prepared for heat waves.

How to avoid heat stroke

In addition to issuing an alert for high temperatures, the U.S. National Weather Service provided the population with a series of recommendations to avoid heat stroke. The first is to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids, and to prioritize water over soft drinks. It is necessary to stay out of the sun and stay in places with a fan or air conditioning and to be especially careful with children, pregnant women, the elderly and pets, who are often the most affected during the heat wave.

If you have to go outdoors, wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Dark and black colors should be avoided at all costs. Finally, specialists recommend limiting strenuous activities to early morning and late afternoon, when the sun is at its weakest. In case of an emergency, call 911 immediately.
